Balmain and Mattel collaborate on Barbie capsule collection

French luxury fashion house Balmain and American multinational toy company Mattel have teamed up for a limited-edition collection.

Titled Barbie x Balmain, the collection comprises of 50 unisex pieces of ready-to-wear and accessories such as broad-shouldered tops, sequined mini-dresses, strapless mermaid gowns, silk satin suits, pajama sets, and bags. Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing pays tribute to Pierre Balmain who presented a miniaturized collection worn by 200 dolls at the 'Theatre de la Mode' in 1945.

'For me, it's a lot more than just a commercial project. It's very emotional. Having Barbie in my Balmain army, making a collection inspired by her where there are no boy clothes or girl clothes, is my small revenge. I think Barbie represents a joyful dream world. There's nothing wrong with a dream. But let's push the dream, and not the dream of the 1950s or 1960s, but 2022,' Rousteing told the New York Times.

In addition to the capsule there will be a collectible NFT offering featuring three Barbie avatars, each wearing an exclusive creation from the capsule. They will be sold at auction through Mattel Creations and the highest bidder of each auction will receive exclusive ownership of both the avatar and a real-life Barbie-scaled version of the featured look.

The Barbie x Balmain will be available for purchase at Balmain stores, balmain.com, Mattel Creations and retailers worldwide beginning January 13th.
