Burberry announces its departure from real fur

British fashion brand Burberry has announced that it will stop using real fur and will also cease the destruction of unsold garments.

The announcement comes ahead of Riccardo Tisci's first runway show for Burberry during London Fashion Week on September 14. It also marks the second change following its change to a new contemporary logo and monogram designed with British graphic designer Peter Saville in August 2018.

With the new initiative, Burberry follows in the footsteps of Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Gucci and Versace who have all adopted synthetic alternatives and support sustainable fashion.

The cease of the destruction of unsold garments will see the company adopt a more responsible outlook of greener practices of recycling, reparation, and donation. It is a step in the right direction given that a few months ago, the British fashion brand was overshadowed in scandal when news broke out that in 2017 it had burned $ 37 million worth of surplus goods to keep them out of the market and keep prices high.

Riccardo Tisci will release his debut collection (without real fur) for the fashion house on 17 September at the London Fashion Week.
