Yelena Yemchuk is a Ukrainian-born photographer and director who has been working in the fashion and music industries since the early 1990s. She is best known for her work with iconic musicians such as Björk, Tori Amos, and The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as her collaborations with fashion designers like Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.

Yemchuk was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1972. She moved to the United States at the age of 17 to pursue a career in photography. After studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, she began working as an assistant to renowned photographer Steven Meisel. During this time, she developed her own unique style of photography that blended elements of fashion and portraiture.

In 1994, Yemchuk began shooting for magazines such as Vogue Italia and Harper’s Bazaar. Her work quickly gained recognition from both the fashion industry and music industry alike. She has since shot album covers for artists such as Björk, Tori Amos, The Smashing Pumpkins, and many more. In addition to her editorial work, Yemchuk has also directed music videos for artists like Björk and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Yemchuk’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world including shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In addition to her photography career, she is also an accomplished painter whose works have been exhibited at galleries throughout Europe and North America.

Yelena Yemchuk continues to be a major influence on both fashion photography and music video direction today. Her unique style of combining elements from both genres has made her one of the most sought-after photographers in the industry today.
