“Free People” is a women's clothing store operated by Urban Outfitters. The brand started out as an online shop only in 1984. As it expanded it open traditional brick-and-mortar stores. The first location opened at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, in 2002.

Free People retail and wholesale presence encompasses over 30 stores in the United States and three wholesale showrooms whose teams have cultivated relationships with over 1,500 specialty boutiques and department stores across the globe.

And even though they have narrowed their department store relationships, business with Nordstrom and Bloomingdales happily continues to flourish.

In addition, they produce a direct-to-consumer catalog and website, providing an inspiring shopping experience for the carefree, confident and curious young woman who appreciates their distinctive assortment of apparel, accessories and housewares.

Free People announced to its employers in May 2009 that it would have to change it's look drastically to stay afloat in the dampened economy. Free People, once boasting "fairy-Tale" lines and with Victorian and goth influenced clothing was no more. The clothes became more basic and simple, which ultimately stripped the brand of what it originally set out be. The clothes went from being produced in the USA and India to China. Today it is renowned for its use of floral and faunal leitmotivs throughout its line.
