Kering sets minimum age for their models

Kering, the French luxury company that owns Gucci, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga has set the minimum age for their models.

The news of its commitment to working only with models of legal age was revealed at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit yesterday. 'As a global luxury group, we are conscious of the influence exerted on younger generations in particular by the images produced by our houses. We believe that we have a responsibility to put forward the best possible practices in the luxury sector and we hope to create a movement that will encourage others to follow suit,' Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO of Kering, says in an official statement.

Pinault also revealed that he's been hired by French president Emmanuel Macron to create a 'coalition' of CEOs and top brands in the fashion industry to join forces and set ambitious sustainability targets together. As one of the largest companies in the industry, Kering has the capacity to implement changes.

The working environment of models worldwide has been plagued for years with racism cases to distressing situations that take place backstage and during castings. Kerings new policy will come into effect during the fall 2020 shows and is in stark contrast to the way many brands are currently casting shows and campaigns. Whether the rest of the fashion world will follow remains to be seen.
