Zohar Shitrit is an Israeli photographer and visual artist based in Tel Aviv. He is best known for his unique and captivating images of the Middle East, which often feature a combination of documentary-style photography and surrealist elements.
Shitrit was born in Jerusalem in 1982 and grew up in a small town near the Dead Sea. He studied photography at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, where he developed an interest in documentary photography. After graduating, he began to travel extensively throughout the Middle East, capturing images of everyday life that often featured surrealist elements.
Shitrit's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world, including at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum in New York City, and The Israel Museum in Jerusalem. His photographs have also been published in various magazines and newspapers such as The New York Times Magazine, Time Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, and Der Spiegel. In addition to his photographic work, Shitrit has also directed several short films that have been screened at film festivals around the world.
Shitrit's work has earned him numerous awards including the International Photography Award for Best Documentary Series (2014), The Hasselblad Masters Award (2015), and The Prix Pictet Award (2016). His photographs are held in private collections around the world as well as public institutions such as The Israel Museum and The Jewish Museum.
