About

Jean-Paul Goude is a French graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, and advertising film director. He is best known for his iconic images of Grace Jones and his work with the fashion house Chanel.

Goude was born in 1940 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. He studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and began his career as an illustrator for the French magazine Hara-Kiri in the 1960s. His illustrations were often humorous and satirical, which earned him a reputation as a provocateur.

In the 1970s, Goude began to focus on photography and film direction. He created iconic images of celebrities such as Grace Jones, Jerry Hall, and Catherine Deneuve. His work with Jones was particularly influential; he created her album covers for Island Records and directed her music videos for "Slave to the Rhythm" and "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)".

In addition to his photography work, Goude has also designed advertising campaigns for brands such as Perrier, Citroën, Kodak, Pepsi Cola, and Chanel. He has also directed commercials for Chanel No 5 featuring Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt. In 2012 he was appointed artistic director of the brand's fragrance line.

Throughout his career Goude has been recognized with numerous awards including the Grand Prix National de la Publicité in France (1984), an Emmy Award (1985), a Clio Award (1986), a Cannes Lion Grand Prix (1987), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center of Photography (2008).

Today Goude continues to work as an artist and photographer while living in Paris with his wife Elisabeth Guiniot.
