Born in Paris in 1952, Mondino grew up surrounded by art and culture. His father was a painter and his mother was a sculptor, so it was only natural that he developed an interest in photography at an early age. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he began his career as a fashion photographer for French magazines such as Elle and Marie Claire.

In the late 1980s, Mondino began to focus on music photography, shooting album covers for artists such as Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, and Björk. His work has been featured on over 200 album covers throughout his career. He also directed music videos for artists like Janet Jackson and The Rolling Stones.

Mondino's work has been exhibited around the world in galleries such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He has also published several books of his photographs including Jean-Baptiste Mondino: Photographs (1995) and Jean-Baptiste Mondino: Portraits (2005).
