Howard Greer was born in Nebraska, USA in 1880. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1916. He then went to New York and joined the fashion house of Lucile for a year. Proceeding to Paris, he spent 4 years working for the houses of Edward Molyneux and Paul Poiret. During this period he also took part in World War I as a soldier.

In 1921, he returned to New York. He started designing costumes for the Greenwich Village Follies in New York. He then went to Hollywood in 1923, and joined Paramount Pictures.

From 1923, Greer created costumes for many films while working for the big studios. In 1927, he opened his own couture shop to work freelance for the movie companies. He was known for his glamourous sophisticated evening gowns and dresses.

He designed costumes for 33 films and his dresses were seen in films right up to 1953.

His autobiography "Designing Male" was published in 1951 to great success.

He retired in 1962, and died in 1974 at the age of 94.
