About

HEMA is a renowned Dutch variety chain store that has made its mark with affordable prices and a diverse range of household goods. Originally established in Amsterdam on November 4, 1926, by the owners of the luxury department store De Bijenkorf, HEMA quickly gained popularity as a price-point retailer in prime town center locations. It distinguished itself by offering goods at standard prices, with items priced at 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 cents.

During World War II, HEMA tragically lost several Jewish employees to the Holocaust, a solemn remembrance observed annually on May 4th at the company's head office. After the war, HEMA underwent a period of rapid expansion, evolving into a one-stop-shop for a wide array of products, including clothing, food, bicycle equipment, gardening tools, and office supplies.

In 2007, Lion Capital acquired HEMA from Maxeda, and in 2010, the company reintroduced its standard pricing model. HEMA's commitment to quality and affordability resonated with consumers, earning it the distinction of being the most indispensable brand in the Netherlands for eight consecutive years.

In recent years, HEMA faced changes in ownership and strategic decisions. In 2020, discussions of a potential sale of the business emerged, ultimately leading to exclusive negotiations with a consortium comprising the Van Eerd Group and Parcom Capital. These negotiations aimed to focus HEMA's activities within Europe, leading to the withdrawal from the UK market and a renewed emphasis on core markets such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France.

As part of this strategic realignment, HEMA decided to exit the Spanish market and close its stores there in 2022. However, the company sees potential for growth in Germany and Austria and will explore further opportunities in those countries. HEMA continues to expand its presence globally, with stores in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Qatar, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and Mexico.

Despite the evolving landscape, HEMA remains committed to its founding principles of offering affordable and well-designed household goods. With its rich history, wide-ranging product selection, and focus on core markets, HEMA continues to serve as a beloved destination for customers seeking quality products at affordable prices.
