Cara Delevingne and Olivier Rousteing pay Homage to Janet Jackson and the 90s

Cara Delevingne is the new face and body of Balmain's spring/summer 2019 campaign.

The model appears naked with chief designer Olivier Rousteing in one of the campaign images that pays homage to Janet Jackson and the music of the 90s. Lensed by Dan Beleiu, Delevingne looks directly into the camera while Rousteing wraps his arms around her, forming a bra with his hands in the black and white shot.

The recreated image dates back to 1993 and was lensed by Patrick Demarchelier with Jackson posing naked save for her then-boyfriend Rene Elizondo's hands. The image was part of the singer's artwork for her album Janet, and went on to become a Rolling Stone cover and became an iconic image of the 90s

'The campaign refers to the legendary album art of the 90s, the great moments of the pop culture of our childhood,' Rousteing told W magazine. 'The campaign shows the reunion of two skin tones, one black - or mixed race - and one white. Choosing to pose naked was all about authenticity. We're going back to basics: I wanted something pure and transparent,' he added explaining that the campaign images are sensual, but have nothing sexual in itself.

About Cara Delevingne, the 33-year-old Frenchman said, 'I love her so much that I do not want to see any clothes on her, her gaze is so strong and magnetic that it almost becomes a garment. Cara has such a strong presence and personality: we chose a reduced set to let her gaze and the lines of her body speak.'

This is the second time that Delevingne has become the face of the French luxury label. She previously starred in Balmain's Fall 2014 Campaign, lensed by Mario Sorrenti, alongside Binx Walton, and Jourdan Dunn.
