Steve McCurry is an American photographer and photojournalist best known for his evocative color photography. He is most famous for his 1984 photograph of a young Afghan girl with piercing green eyes, which appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine.

McCurry was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1950. He studied film at Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1974. After college, he traveled to India and Afghanistan, where he began taking photographs. His work was published in various magazines, including National Geographic, Time, and Life.

In 1985, McCurry was one of the first photographers to enter Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion. He documented the plight of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan and Iran during this time. His photographs from this period were published in a book titled "The Afghans".

McCurry has since traveled extensively throughout Asia and Africa, photographing people from all walks of life. His work has been featured in numerous books and exhibitions around the world. In addition to his photography career, McCurry has also served as a mentor to aspiring photographers through workshops and lectures.

McCurry's work has been recognized with numerous awards including Magazine Photographer of the Year (1985), Robert Capa Gold Medal (2000), Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center of Photography (2003), and Honorary Fellowship from The Royal Photographic Society (2004). In 2014 he was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame.
