About

Norbert Schoerner is a German photographer and visual artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Born in Berlin in 1962, Schoerner studied photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany. After graduating, he began working as a freelance photographer for magazines such as Stern, Geo, and The New Yorker.

Schoerner's work is characterized by its surrealist aesthetic and its exploration of the relationship between reality and fantasy. His photographs often feature dreamlike landscapes or abstracted figures that appear to be suspended in time. He has also created several series of photographs that explore the idea of memory and nostalgia, such as his "Memory Maps" series which features images of places from his childhood reimagined through a modern lens.

In addition to his photographic work, Schoerner has also created several short films and installations that explore similar themes. His films have been screened at film festivals around the world, including the Berlin International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. He has also collaborated with musicians such as Björk on music videos for her albums Post (1995) and Homogenic (1997).

Schoerner's work has been exhibited widely throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. He has had solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; The Photographers' Gallery in London; The Centre Pompidou in Paris; The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne; and The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. His photographs are held in numerous public collections including those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The National Gallery of Canada; and The Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
