Fairer was born in New York City in 1965. He attended the School of Visual Arts and graduated with a degree in photography. After college, he began working as a freelance photographer for various publications. His work quickly gained recognition and he soon became one of the most sought-after photographers in the fashion industry.

Throughout his career, Fairer has traveled extensively to capture stunning images from around the world. He has photographed celebrities such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie, as well as models such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.
