Why Gisele Bundchen Is The Perfect Chanel Woman

There are some people who seem to have it all and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen is one of them in a league of her own. With a body that most women would die for, a career that sees her travel across the globe, a rich and handsome husband in American footballer Tom Brady, two incredibly gorgeous children, and a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme things are pretty rosy for the supermodel. With acting credits including The Devil Wears Prada and Taxi under her belt, the fashion icon has now added an extra notch to it with the release of the new film for Chanel No.5.

Chosen by Chanel for her 'natural beauty and modern femininity' Bundchen follows in the footsteps of Lauren Hutton, Catherine Deneuve and Audrey Tautou. This Chanel No. 5 film-commercial, titled 'The One That I Want', is about the 21st-century woman who has it all but draws the line on her career when her marriage is in trouble, ultimately choosing love. Conceived, produced, and directed by Australian director Baz Luhrmann, (who helmed The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, and Romeo + Juliet), with a soundtrack re-interpreted and crooned by a very talented newcomer, Lo-Fang, 'The One That I Want' feels like a trailer for a full-length film that never got made (Not to mention its length of 3.5 minutes). Its a story of the modern Chanel woman, as interpreted by Lurhmann and enacted by Bundchen. Bundchen who aptly is identified as the Chanel No. 5 woman of today, is reflective of how Coco Chanel herself brought the “new era” into the old world in the first place with her new-world female power and sensibilities.

In the film, Luhrmann looks at the paradox of the Chanel woman with Gisele’s character portraying the modern woman, who wears many hats, (similar to Coco herself.) "One minute she's on the beach, and the next she's in a gorgeous frock," he said. Gisele is the perfect person to embody that spirit, according to Luhrmann, since she herself is a woman who wears many hats. "She has a job where she creates these aspirational images, but in real life, she is a wife and a mother." And the campaign video subtly conveys that Chanel No. 5 is the multifaceted woman’s fragrance of choice. It’s the fragrance that one can surf in, socialize in, be romantic in. "Coco brought the new era to the old world she was the one the smashed the conventions, she was 100 percent behind the new, 100 percent behind possibility, and, 100 percent, in her DNA, a self-empowered woman." Lurhmann shared of Chanel herself.

In essence, through the short film we see the many facets of the modern woman: the athlete, the mother, the fashionista. But throughout it all, the theme of love is present. Actor Michiel Huisman (known for his latest role as Daario Naharis in the HBO series Game of Thrones) plays Gisele’s lover. We see her cry over him while speeding through New York City in a vintage convertible, and we see her face light up with joy after they kiss; their relationship and the tensions present are very real. "The Chanel woman can be with herself on a beach, can be with her child, can have an aspirational and fulfilling work life, and at the same time she can have a true relationship; she can have romance," says Baz Luhrmann. "And in the end, the Chanel woman chooses love."

Having worked with his dear friend and actress Nicole Kidman 10 years ago in the previous Chanel No. 5 film, Luhrmann was all praise for Gisele. He was surprised at how fearlessly she went after this role. "What I love about her is that her body is her instrument from early on, and she's learned to express so many things. She can do anything!, [Gisele] can be incredibly athletic". Luhrmann said of his leading lady in a behind-the-scenes clip. Infact its Gisele's real life ability to balance multiple roles that made her a perfect fit for the film. Bundchen has deemed her most important role to date, that of wife and mum. She’s well known for posting photos on the internet of her and husband Tom in adorable poses with their children. "[Gisele] in her own DNA, comes from a new world sensibility, She has children. She has a very, very significant relationship. She has a career where she can create aspirational, sensual, incredibly glamorous imagery, and she felt honored, I think, to be the No. 5 woman," Luhrmann concluded.

Gisele is the epitome of how a really good model ought to be inspiring and how that doesn’t just come from beauty, it comes from your personality. According to a statement released by the brand earlier this year, Bündchen’s “natural beauty and modern femininity” make her a fit for the campaigns. She’s joined the ranks of Bratt Pitt, Marilyn Monroe and Nicole Kidman, who have also represented this timeless fragrance.

In a new interview for The One That I Want Campaign, Gisele spoke about collaborating with the legendary director and what today’s No.5 woman means to her. “I’m a big fan of his,” the supermodel said, “He really is such an amazing energy to be around.” “I think today a woman is multi-facted, there are so many different things. Women are at the head of companies, running businesses, raising families - it’s being the wife and it’s being the sister and it’s being the daughter, there are a lot of different roles that women are playing, so I was very happy to be chosen to represent all that because I definitely feel all of that.”

Gisele is undoubtedly at the top of her game. Having topped the Forbes' World's Highest-Paid Models ranking list for the eight consecutive year, with $42 million in earnings for the past year, making her, incidentally, the bread-winner in her family (husband Tom Brady made $38.3 million). Her impressive pre-tax earnings were credited to high-profile modelling campaigns for H&M, Chanel, Pantene and Carolina Herrera, as well as her work as the face of Oral-B in Brazil. Besides modeling contracts the business savvy beauty has also profited from her partnerships with Brazilian footwear company Grendene and her cosmetics line Sejaa, not to mention a lingerie collection with Brazilian intimates firm, Hope. Gisele far out-earns her fellow models. She made over five times more than Doutzen Kroes, 29, and Adriana Lima, 33, who came in joint second place on the list with past year earnings of $8million each.

Contrary to Linda Evangelista's famous statement that she wouldn't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day, Gisele does not get out of bed for less than $128,000 a day. She's a a Global powerhouse and a household name. When it comes to super models, it doesn’t get hotter than Gisele Bundchen. For starters, she has experience, spending more than half of her life in the fashion game. That’s invaluable. She’s also picked up language skills, speaking fluent English, Italian, Spanish, her native Portuguese and a little German and French, to boot. Of course there’s no doubting she also has a real head for business. The face of 20 brands, she can play to both the high-end fashion audience and the mass consumer. She also made sure she stood out further from the crowd by creating her distinctive walk at the fashion shows & endearing herself to major brands. But the common denominator in everything she does is her authenticity. She’s true to herself and to what she believes in and people respect that

In the world of Fashion today it pays to be beautiful but it takes more than just good looks to get to the top. Gisele's success is not credited to her curves but also those impressive numbers that she's raked up over the years. Gisele has become a brand in itself. She knows her values, who she is, and has clarity about what she wants to achieve and that has paid off for her. In modelling terms, she has it all. She is no wonder the Chanel woman of today.
