Viktor & Rolf celebrate 25th anniversary with exhibition at Kunsthal

In celebration of their 25th anniversary, Viktor & Rolf are having a large retrospective exhibition at Rotterdam's Kunsthal.

Titled 'Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years' the exhibition is based on the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne exhibition and has been curated by Canadian curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot. It explores the radical conception of 'wearable art' and the elements that make their designs unique in the contemporary fashion world.

The expo features more than 45 haute couture pieces, specially designed costumes for various ballet and opera performances, custom-made looks for Madonna in 2016 for her Miami Art Basel fund-raising concert, and earlier designs from the duo's own archives as well as collections of international museums. There are also a number of looks from their work 'Dolls'. These are 25 handmade replicas of antique dolls that carry the most characteristic outfits of the Dutch fashion house.

'With exquisite craftsmanship and dreamy silhouettes, sometimes made from tinkling bells or red carpet, the fashion artists Viktor and Rolf - a real dutch national treasure - have been creating wearable art for the past twenty-five years in the most unique and singular style,' Loriot said in a press release.

Accompanying the exhibition is the anniversary publication 'Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years', compiled by Loriot and includes an exclusive recent interview by the curator with the designers, a fascinating glossary of the designers and a rich iconography with images by leading artists and photographers such as Cindy Sherman, Andreas Gursky, Herb Ritts, Anton Corbijn, Mert & Marcus, Annie Leibovitz, David LaChapelle, Tim Walker, Nick Knight and Inez & Vinoodh.

There will also be a pop-up store at the Kunsthal featuring limited edition merchandise such as posters, books, socks, T-shirts, scarfs, badges and bags decorated with the original sketches that formed the basis of Viktor & Rolf's haute couture collections.

Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Artists 25 Years will run from 27 May till 30 September.
