Hedi Slimane becomes creative director of Celine

Hedi Slimane has been named artistic director of Celine. The announcement was made by LVMH on the morning of January 21.

The former creative director of Saint Laurent will take over Phoebe Philo's post who left the French fashion house after ten years. He will direct all Celine collections, extending to men's fashion, couture and fragrances. In joining LVMH, Slimane will be reunited with his former boss Sidney Toledano, who made him the creative director of Dior Homme when he was then CEO.

Slimane will develop the first ever menswear and couture lines for the house. As he is known for giving brands a makeover when he takes over as Creative Director, therefore a completely new Celine is therefore to be expected, not only in terms of the collections, but also the entire visual appearance of the brand, store textures or celebrities who will wear the brand.

'I am particularly happy that Hedi is back within the LVMH Group and taking the reins of our Celine Maison,' LVMH Chairman Bernard Arnaultin a statement. 'He is one of the most talented designers of our time. I have been a great admirer of his work since we collaborated on Dior Homme, which he launched to global critical acclaim in the 2000s. His arrival at Celine reinforces the great ambitions that LVMH has for this Maison. Hedi will oversee and develop all creativity for both women's and men's fashion, but also for leather goods, accessories and fragrances. He will leverage his global vision and unique aesthetic virtuosity in further building an iconic French Maison'

'I am delighted to join Bernard Arnault in this all embracing and fascinating mission for Celine. I greatly look forward to returning to the exciting world of fashion and the dynamism of the ateliers,' Slimane himself said in a statement.

'Hedi Slimane is an exceptional designer, complete artist and passionate about his work. I am certain that he will bring his renowned creative energy and discipline to lead Celine to ever greater success,' Sidney Toledano added.

The news of Slimane's appointment was arguably the best-kept secret in the fashion world and one of the biggest surprises in recent years. He will start his new role from February 1 and will present his first collection for the French house in September of this year.
